Thought We Were Done, Did Ya?
PLEASE POST THIS ON YOUR BLOG EVEN IF YOU AREN’T IN CALIFORNIA – WE NEED TO GET THE WORD OUT.
After last weekend’s passionate protests throughout our wonderful country, I figured things would die down – but NO! Indeed not – and this weekend promises to be even bigger. Go check out the details at California Outreach.
“TAKE IT TO SACRAMENTO ON NOVEMBER 22ND!
With the unfortunate outcome of the recent passage of Proposition 8, the GLBT community has united in a presence that we have not seen since the early 1980’s and the onset of the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
It is with great respect that California Outreach, in partnership with Equality Action Now, humbly asks you to join GLBT individuals and organizations, PFLAG and our straight brothers and sisters at a peaceful outreach on the steps of the California State Capitol Building at 2:00pm on November 22nd.
Please join us as we reach out to all the citizens of California to demonstrate that we will not tolerate discrimination to be written into our State Constitution.
Who: Anyone and everyone.
Where: California State Capitol Building, Sacramento, CA
When: 11/22/08 2:00PM
Why: Equal Rights are inalienable and CANNOT be taken away.
In 1987 the largest rally for gay rights in Sacramento took place, counting 15,000 strong. We need to stand together and make a statement that we will not stand idly by and let the rights of our sons, daughters, parents, and friends be taken away. Twenty one years later — 30,000 strong. Are YOU ready to make history?
The success of this event depends upon getting the word out. Invite your friends!”

Perhaps a lot of those who voted down the law have started to see the same arguments being made that were used in a failed effort to prolong the ‘no interracial couples’ laws in the sixties. Then, the civil rights and voting rights acts were 1st and the rest gradually followed suit. I’m sure hoping that will again be the case as those who are so proud they’ve seen a minority elected to the White House realize what a mixed message their votes send. Minorities-yes; gay rights-no. None are so blind as those who will not see. Vive l’égalité

Schwarzenegger is all over the map on this. He vetoed a bill for marriage equality in 2005 and another one again in 2007, but he was against Prop 8 this year. This could be an evolution in his position, but on the other hand he could easily tell his Repugnican buddies at fundraisers that he opposed Prop 8 because he just didn’t think a narrow definition of marriage is be something enshrined in the state constitution.

I voted no on 8. The attacks on the church are not helping. We need to figure out how to get the fringe off the front page of the news.

I posted your flyer on my humble blog, for what it’s worth. A link to the article will soon get sent out to Twitter too, since that’s on automatic.
I was down thataway in the Redwoods and Bay Area last June when the State Supreme Court decision came down granting marriage equality, and it was a wonderful thing, while it lasted. There’s still a chance the court will strike down this proposition on the grounds that a simple majority ought not radically pivot and remove human rights granted in the constitution. And there’s a chance the state assembly can reverse it, if you can get the Governator on board.

Welcome 6 Degrees – I just went over and checked out your blog – I think I rant enough about the ‘burbs to make up for you stickin’ to Midtown/East Sac.
Thanks for the post on the protest – hope to see you there?

Thanks, Lori. Technically, you probably won’t see me there, since you don’t know what I look like.
More seriously, I’m stunned this proposition succeeded at the polls, and I’ve realized that those of us who opposed it by voting (thinking that would be enough) need to step up to the plate.
See y’all there.
